The Swedish Demographic Association
This is the website of the Swedish Demographic Association (Svensk Demografisk Förening – SDF). On this page we provide a summary of our history, activities, membership and latest news. If you have questions regarding or to the Swedish Demographic Association, you can contact us via info@demografi.se.
History
The SDF was established in 1970. By convening activities in Sweden, the association aims to provide further insights on the importance of demographic issues and the use of demographic methods in society, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. In addition, the association enables and promotes contact between demographic researchers, as well between researchers and others working with demographic issues in Sweden. Facilitating communication networks is especially important today when interest in demographic issues has increased.
Activities
The SDF activities include the organization of seminars and other activities around different demographic themes. We publish a newsletter for members a few times a year. We regularly email members about upcoming conferences, seminars, and other activities.
In the annual board meeting, which takes place in the spring, the new board for the coming year is elected.
Board
Our current board consists of Vitor Miranda (chairperson), Karen Haandrikman (deputy chairperson), Erik Carlsson (treasurer), Finn Hedefalk (secretary), Helen Eriksson (board member), Mojgan Padyab (board member) and Haodong Qi (board member).
Membership
The association is open to anyone with an interest in demographic issues. Companies, institutions, authorities, libraries and research groups can become support members of the association. To become a member, please email to erik.carlsson@sociology.su.se and please indicate your name, address and email address. The membership fee is 100 SEK per year and can be paid either through Swish (123 245 31 24; please indicate your name when making the transition) or via plusgiro (15 81 07-3; please indicate your name). A third option is to email us at erik.carlsson@sociology.su.se and we will send you a payment slip through the mail.
Conference
The Swedish Demographic Association is part of the Nordic Demographic Association, which also has Danish, Finnish and Norwegian member associations. Every second year, a Nordic Demographic Symposium is organized in one of the member states. In 2019, the SDF co-organized the 21st Nordic Demographic Symposium in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Thesis competition
Annually, the SDF awards a prize for the best undergraduate or master thesis from a Swedish university. The topic should relate to population issues in a historical, contemporary or methodological perspective. The next deadline is going to be announced in the autumn of 2020.
