 The Swedish Demographic Association

This is the website of the Swedish Demographic Association (Svensk Demografisk Förening – SDF). On this page we provide a summary of our history, activities, membership and latest news. If you have questions regarding or to the Swedish Demographic Association, you can contact us via [email protected].

History
The SDF was established in 1970. By convening activities in Sweden, the association aims to provide further insights on the importance of demographic issues and the use of demographic methods in society, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. In addition, the association enables and promotes contact between demographic researchers, as well between researchers and others working with demographic issues in Sweden. Facilitating communication networks is especially important today when interest in demographic issues has increased.

Activities
The SDF activities include the organization of seminars and other activities around different demographic themes. We publish a newsletter for members a few times a year. We regularly email members about upcoming conferences, seminars, and other activities.
In the annual board meeting, which takes place in the spring, the new board for the coming year is elected.

Board
Our current board consists of Helen Eriksson (chairperson), Erik Carlsson (treasurer), Finn Hedefalk (secretary), Haodong Qi (board member), Li Ma (board member), and Samuel Sundvall (board member).

Membership
The association is open to anyone with an interest in demographic issues. To become a member, please email to [email protected] and please indicate your name, address and email address. The membership fee is 150 SEK per year and can be paid either through Swish (123 245 31 24; please indicate your name when making the transfer) or via bankgiro (5424-7135; please indicate your name). A third option is to email us at [email protected] and we will send you a payment slip through the mail.

Partner institutes
In addition to individual memberships, we offer an organizational membership. Organizational members are called partner institutes and support the Swedish Demographic Association with 2000 SEK per year. Our current partner institutes include university departments and units, government authorities, private companies, and research institutes. Let us know if your organization is interested in becoming a partner institute.

In 2022, the Nordic Demographic Symposium took place in Oslo.

Thesis competition
Annually, the SDF awards a prize for the best undergraduate or master thesis from a Swedish university. The topic should relate to population issues in a historical, contemporary or methodological perspective. The annual competition deadline is in March of every year - the winner normally is announced in May.
